Pornography Addiction and Compulsive Sexual Behavior

colorful picture of a winding path to represent the way to recovery using cognitive-behavioral therapy and the 12 step programs from addiction.

Recovering from pornography addiction or compulsive sexual addiction is not a simple process. Nor is it easy to live with someone who is involved in this addictive behavior.

In fact, most recovering addicts and their partners agree that true recovery is a process they will be working on for the rest of their lives.

Don't get caught on the term "addict." Since the 1970s researchers have realized that human beings could become addicted to behaviors and activities as well as chemicals and alcohol.

This is addictive behavior that is seriously limiting your ability to form truly "intimate" relationships. If you are the person with the compulsive behavior, consider what type of message you're sending your spouse or significant other about your level of commitment to the relationship.

If you are a spouse of someone with a sexual addiction, I understand how much this hurts. You may be angry and frustrated. This is not about you or your adequacy as a mate/person. You'll find comfort and help by visiting the Codependency section.

There is help and hope. It's available through treatment. There are several 12-step programs directed at this topic. To find out more about them and locate any nearby meetings here are their links:

Sexaholics Anonymous

Sexual Compulsives Anonymous

Another helpful treatment program is the Life Star™ program. There are treatment sessions located in cities throughout the United States.
